How do you calculate the correct weight for height?

Updated on October 7, 2009

How do you calculate the correct weight for height?

First off, convert your weight in lbs. to kg.

85 lbs. = 187 kg. , 86 lbs. = 189 kg. , 87 lbs. = 191 kg. , 88 lbs. = 194 kg. , 89 lbs. = 196 kg. , 90 lbs. = 198 kg. , 100 lbs. = 220 lbs. , 125 lbs. = 275 kg. , 150 lbs. = 330 kg. , 175 lbs. = 385 kg. , 200 lbs. =  440 kg. , 250 lbs. = 551 kg. , 300 lbs. = 661 kg.

To figure out your correct weight for height with the body mass index calculation, you will also need to know your height in meters.  .0254 meters is equivalent to one inch, in other words, one meter is equal to 39.37 inches.  If you figure out how many inches tall you are, you can divide that by 39.37, and you will know how many meters in height you are.

Converting height to meters does seem somewhat confusing, so here's a chart to help you along:

4.5 feet = 1.3716 meters, 4.6 feet = 1.40208 meters, 4.7 feet = 1.43256 meters, 4.8 feet = 1.46304 meters, 4.9 feet = 1.49352 meters, 5 feet = 1.524 meters, 5.1 feet = 1.55448 meters, 5.2 feet = 1.58496 meters, 5.3 feet = 1.61544 meters, 5.4 feet = 1.64592 meters, 5.5 feet = 1.6764 meters, 5.6 feet = 1.70688 meters, 5.7 feet = 1.73736 meters, 5.8 feet = 1.76784 meters, 5.9 feet = 1.79832 meters, 6.0 feet = 1.8288 meters, 6.1 feet = 1.85928 meters, 6.2 feet = 1.88976 meters, 6.3 feet = 1.92024 meters, 6.4 feet = 1.95072 meters, 6.5 feet = 1.9812 meters

To figure out correct weight for height using the body mass index (BMI), you must take your weight in kilograms and divide it by the square of the height in meters (kg/m2).  If I were 1.75 meters tall and weighed 70 kg., the formula would look like this BMI = 70 kg / (1.75 m)2 = 70 / 3,0625 = 22.9.  With my BMI at 22.9, I would be at the correct weight for height.  With a BMI of anywhere between 18-25 it would be considered normal.  Anything below 18 would be too thin, and above 25 would be too heavy.  Did you know that if your BMI is greater than 30, you increase your chances of premature death by 50-100%?

The risks of being overweight include heart disease, diabetes, stroke, liver disease, cancer, gallbladder disease, respiratory problems, and arthritis.  If your body mass index is too high, I'm sure you will agree that something needs to be done.  It may not be easy, but you can reach your proper body weight.  If your correct weight for height is out of proportion, you have probably heard these things countless times, either from friends or doctors: that weight loss is important, that if you don't lose weight, your life span will be shortened by several years, that if you don't lose weight, you will get afflicted with several killer diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol level, high blood pressure, heart diseases, sleep apnea, etc. However, when should you lose weight? When is the right time to say: 'Enough is enough! I am sick and tired of my fat belly, so I'm going to lose weight'?

Well, nobody can tell that for you. You need to decide the correct timing for weight loss yourself. Also note that the timing you choose can make or break your weight loss plan. You should start your weight loss efforts when you feel you're just out of the correct weight for height goals, but if you are morbidly obese, then no other method except expensive weight loss surgeries may be able to help you with weight loss. As you can see, when it comes to weight loss, timing is extremely important!

I have been a fitness coach for many years. I have a friend called Jim who, at one point of time, was excessively overweight (if you look at him now you won't be able to tell that just a few years ago, he had a large belly and flabby arms). He was suffering from sleep apnea. He couldn't get proper sleep, and no wonder felt dizzy and drowsy all the time. He felt he didn't have the energy to perform his day-to-day activities, and soon people began to call him lazy. Believe it or not, his obesity was the root cause behind all his problems.

Jim and I are good friends, but for some reason, Jim never asked me for any sort of weight loss advice. It was as if he was not aware of his weight problem. Until one day...

He came to his senses when he was not invited by his friend at his birthday party!

First he found it rather strange, but then he realized that it was all because of his body weight. He also realized that lately several people had started ignoring him. As you can see, his weight problem had become a big hindrance in his life! That was the time when he finally decided that he needed to lose weight.

He asked me for advice, which I was more than happy to give. A year later, Jim has not only lost several pounds, but also felt better and more energetic. He is now not only able to sleep properly but also perform his regular activities without a problem. He is always full of energy and enthusiasm!

As you can see, Jim waited for the right time before he started his weight loss efforts. Before you start your weight loss journey, ask yourself if it is the correct time for you to lose weight! Why do you want to lose weight? Are you unable to bear the weight of your fat belly any longer? Do you feel that of late you've become lazy? Are you unable to get promotions in your job? Is your correct weight for height out of wack? Are you getting turned down for dates? Does your doctor advise you to lose weight? Whatever it is, when you decide that it is time to shed those extra pounds, take action! You WILL succeed!
